Summary

 

Spire is hiring a Data Scientist in Birmingham, AL, or St. Louis, MO. The Data Scientist will play a vital role in BUILDING the Data Science practice at Spire. This role will have a direct impact on transforming the delivery and use of advanced insight across the enterprise by driving the establishment and execution around data science as a discipline and determining the technology and processes to deliver advanced analytics and machine learning-based projects across Spire.  

The ideal candidate is adept at using large data sets to find opportunities for data and process optimization and using models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. The candidate must have strong experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of tools to build, train and operationalize advanced models. They must be comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders from functional and technical teams. The right candidate will have a passion for discovering solutions hidden in large data sets and working with stakeholders to understand business needs and deliver impactful solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish and grow Data Science practice at Spire by instituting the design and implementation processes for the development, deployment, and configuration of cloud analytical and machine learning models
  • Guide and inspire the organization about the business potential and strategy of data science
  • Perform and automate Data Collection, Integration, Exploration and Preparation across enterprise datasets using cloud data technology (MS Azure)
  • Utilize modern and best practice statistical analysis and model selection techniques for large data sets to build models that maximize insight and actionable results to address business problems
  • Apply various Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and advanced analytics techniques to perform classification or prediction tasks
  • Complete testing of ML models, such as cross-validation, A/B testing, bias and fairness
  • Operationalize ML models and architect the integration of output to business processes and systems
  • Monitor execution and health of production ML models to prevent model drift and maintain accuracy and relevancy.
  • Establish best practices around MLOps processes and system architecture
  • Build and manage the modeling environment (Azure ML) and offer guidance on other data related architecture improvements
  • Work with Data Engineering team to ensure appropriate target data is sourced for modeling from cloud systems, pipelines and locally hosted solutions and integrations
  • Work with CI/CD tools and processes used by the development and data engineering teams
  • Troubleshoot production issues and coordinate with the development team to streamline deployments
  • Document and design processes; data governance policies and update existing standard operating procedures
  • Follow all best practices from the data science discipline and procedures as established by Spire
  • Work in conjunction with the Advanced Analytics, BI and Infrastructure (Networking, Azure Support, Security) teams
  • Train other business and IT staff on basic data science principles and techniques

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar degree and/or equivalent work experience

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • 7+ years’ previous experience with model development and testing, deployment, or operationalizing and productionizing advanced models
  • Experience guiding technology organizations in building and integrating data science practices
  • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics: regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage etc.) and experience with applications.
  • 5+ years' experience with Cloud Data Science Technology (Azure preferred) and proficient in SQL, R, Python, Azure ML, and visualization/reporting tools like PowerBI, Tableau
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with a proactive problem-solving mindset and abilities
  • Extensively versed in MLOps and deploying operational models within an Azure or other hosted environment

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Hybrid remote/office environment (3 days in-office, 2 day work-from-home)
  • Travel – 25%
