The Spire Energy Senior Accountant supports the Gas Marketing business unit to prepare, examine and analyze accounting records and financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.  Senior Accountant must have strong accounting analytical skills.  This position is located in Houston, Texas.

Primary duties:

  • Preparation of the monthly financial reporting package and journal entries.
  • Maintain and analyze gas storage inventory worksheets and calculations.
  • Responsible for all accounting aspects of retail related books. This includes invoicing (in the system as well as sending invoices to customers), sales tax management, and entering fixed charges from other companies that we include on our invoices.
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate recording and analysis of revenues, expenses, and derivative activity.
  • Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare financial statements for management reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze balance sheet account reconciliations as part of monthly control structure.
  • Research and prepare financial variance analysis that provides qualitative and interpretive value-added to the underlying numeric variances.
  • Work closely with internal auditors and business control representatives in the identification of potential risks and the application of solutions to mitigate.
  • Assist with any external audit requests by providing required information and justifying accounting policies.
  • Assist in preparation of departmental budget and forecast activities.
  • Assist other staff and unit Controller with complex analysis and related duties as assigned.
  • Work through reporting processes and continually identify areas for systems and process improvements to support ongoing business operations.
  • Adhere to effective internal controls.

Qualifications:

  • Sound understanding of IFRS, including application.
  • Strong Computer and accounting technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of the corporate hierarchy and between multiple office locations on written and oral interfaces.
  • Knowledge and experience with computer applications such as SAP and Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
  • Strong time management skills to manage multiple projects with varying timelines, as well as manage ad hoc reporting requests.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-moving and changing culture.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build and establish rapport with a diverse array of people.
  • Ability to work independently with limited management oversight.
  • Financial accounting experience preferred.
  • Energy industry experience preferred.

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • None

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the energy industry or public accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Experience with accounting for derivatives and hedging strongly preferred.

Certificates, licenses, registrations:

  • CPA license and/or MBA preferred

Work environment:

  • Work is normally performed in a shared office environment in Houston, TX.
  • Typically, 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday. Overtime may be required. 
  • Occasional travel may be required but will be minimal.
