This position is responsible for assisting in identifying, evaluating and executing growth opportunities for Spire and its businesses. It will provide in-depth hands-on experience with valuation, modeling and due diligence of corporate and asset mergers and acquisitions. The intern will be an integral part of the highly visible and very active Strategy and Corporate Development department.

Primary duties:

  • Assist in the strategic planning and long-term financial planning processes for Spire, its business units and emerging businesses
  • Assist in preparing financial and valuation models and analyses, pro-forma financial statements and business cases for existing businesses and potential new businesses
  • Assist on M&A projects, participating to varying degrees in certain phases of project and transaction work (e.g., evaluation and diligence)
  • Assist in preparing recommendations and presentations for potential acquisitions, investments and other strategic initiatives to the senior management team
  • Create databases and help refine analytical frameworks, models, tools, etc. to support Spire's strategic planning and corporate development efforts, including:
    • Conducting industry value chain, competitive and strategic analyses
    • Preparing capital market, M&A and transaction analyses
    • Conducting high level and detailed analyses of targets
  • All other duties as assigned


  • Core finance, accounting and economics classes; knowledge of business and financial concepts; ability to assist in evaluating business opportunities; properly frame a problem, weigh relevance and accuracy of information; evaluate alternative paths forward and assist with recommendations
  • Advanced Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills
  • Proficiency with discounted cash flows and other valuation techniques
  • Analytical mind, strategic thinking, comfort with abstract concepts and complex technical issues, and demonstrated intellectual curiosity
  • Proven track record of persistence, sound judgement, ability to work effectively within a dynamic team setting but also work independently and manage time effectively
  • Interest in the energy industry

Education and experience:

  • Undergraduates: Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting or economics. MBAs: Pursuing an MBA with concentration in finance
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Must be a currently enrolled rising Junior, Senior or Graduate Student in the Fall of 2019.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must have at least 1 year of general work experience.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency required in Word, Excel, and Power Point
