Summary

The Spire Group is seeking a Senior Safety Specialist to work in our St. Louis, Missouri operation. This position will assist the Manager, Safety in developing employee injury prevention strategies and programs and ensuring a uniform and consistent safety program between all areas of the Company.  This position will provide input for department business plan based on field observations, audit and injury trends. This position will also work with the Safety Manager and department managers to implement programs and procedures to effect safety leadership, a value-based safety culture, and to prevent injury and reduce severity; prevent damage to company assets, and to ensure regulatory compliance.   Furthermore, this position will foster and promote an environment that challenges and enables the Company to achieve continuous improvement in the field of employee safety and health.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures that routine monthly safety meetings are held at all locations. Provides monthly safety meeting topic material to all locations. Facilitates and leads safety meetings with operations management as requested.
  • Ensures that routine safety committee meetings are held at all locations. Provides safety information and material to safety committee members as requested. Periodically attends safety committee meetings.
  • Keeps abreast of safety information and provides guidance and technical assistance to supervisors and managers in identifying, evaluating, and correcting health and safety hazards.
  • Ensures that safety audits and inspections are conducted at all locations and prepares monthly reports on safety audit activity.
  • Assist the Manager of Safety as requested in budget preparation and analysis.
  • Conducts personal injury incident and motor vehicle accident investigations as requested.   Performs root cause analysis and determines corrective actions as requested. Develops lessons learned safety bulletins. Compiles and monitors safety metrics.
  • Assist the Manager of Safety in developing safety policies, procedures, guidelines and safety handbooks.
  • Develops safety training presentations and material and conducts safety training classes as requested.
  • Performs ergonomic assessments of work stations and makes recommendations.
  • Ensures OSHA compliance via safety audits and inspections and tests including fork lift, hot work, elevated work, LO/TO, confined space entry, fire extinguishers, respirator fit test, hearing test, and monthly safety reports. Meet with and provide resources during OSHA Inspections.
  • Performs PPE hazard assessments and assists with the selection of PPE to include flash suits, respirators, protective eyewear, and hearing protection. 
  • Conducts special studies and field audits that will determine the extent and nature of problem areas.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of safety and is willing and able to comply with all safety regulations and Company safety policy.
  • Develops and revises emergency action plans for all facilities.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as determined by Spire to be in the best interest of the Company and departments served.
  • Regularly on-call for incident evaluation and response.v
  • All other duties as assigned.

Essential Characteristics and Competencies

  • Five years of regulatory compliance experience.
  • Natural Gas industry experience preferred.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Safety, Safety Management, Engineering.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of industry experience.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of working experience as Safety Specialist.

  • Requires knowledge in risk assessment, safety regulations, and accident prevention.
  • Ability to interpret regulatory standards and apply the requirements to the natural gas industry.
  • Professional knowledge of OHSA regulations and applicable consensus and national standards for personnel safety.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-moving and changing culture.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build and establish rapport with a diverse array of people.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in order to meet individual goals and deadlines.

Physical demands, environment and schedule

Shared office environment.

  • Regular travel to operating locations with occasional overnight travel.
  • Moderate outdoor work in varied weather. When conducting field work, may be exposed to natural gas and other chemicals, extreme hot and cold outdoor temperatures, near moving mechanical parts, exposed to moderate to loud noise level, and work near traffic.v
