Summary

This position will oversee and support the company’s development and implementation of Safety Management Systems, SMS as defined by API RP 1173. SMS utilizes a “Plan, Do Check, Act” cycle which focuses on continuous improvement of safety over time. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with safety regulations, identify potential hazards, and implement effective risk mitigation strategies. SMS is not a program or procedure but rather a framework used to support a holistic approach to safety throughout Spire. 

Duties and Responsibilities

•    Drive the implementation of safety as a core value
•    Oversee and support the company’s development and implementation of SMS defined by API RP 1173 and in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
•    Conduct regular safety assessments to identify any potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols
•    Collaborate with other departments to integrate safety practices into daily operations
•    Analyze incident reports and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence
•    Provide training and support to employees on safety procedures and best practices
•    Stay informed about industry trends, regulations, and best practices to continuously improve safety processes
•    Participate in emergency response planning and drills
•    Initiate and support the Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle for collection and evaluation of data and information
•    Collect information, review, and manage the gap analysis for SMS 
•    Review and organize data and metrics associated with SMS elements

  • Ability to learn industry standards and regulatory code pertinent to pipelines and natural gas operations including CFR Part 191, 192, 193, and 195.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Minimum 0-2 years' engineering experience in natural gas or similar industries
  • Familiarity with state and federal pipeline safety regulations a plus
  • Occasionally perform project management tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with both internal peers, staff of acquired entities and third-party service providers
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and use of Spire’s systems such as Maximo, sharepoint and ESRI ARcGIS

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Normally works inside office surroundings but will occasionally work outdoors in the field under varying weather conditions with moderate physical exertion
  • Typically Monday through Friday; hy-brid in-office/remote work schedule.
  • Occasional travel or overtime as required
