Summary

Spire is seeking a Supervisor, Construction to work in the Birmingham operations service area.  This position will be responsible for managing, coordinating and supervising the installation, replacement and/or maintenance of pipe of various sizes and materials.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and supervise the work involved in more complex installations or replacement projects involving all material types and sizes of pipe, including plastic, cast iron and steel
  • Plan and supervise the construction procedures and installation of each job, per Company standards, including contacting USIC or utilities to have facilities marked
  • Contact customers or contractors for access and availability to keep job progressing
  • Complete necessary paperwork and/or data entry, via computer, for Payroll, Engineering, Safety, etc.
  • Monitor the job site for conditions that may be hazardous to employees or the public and keep track of existing soil conditions and maintain proper shoring and sloping per OSHA and Company standards
  • Train employees on proper construction and/or distribution maintenance procedures and standards
  • Observe and evaluate new and probationary employees
  • Manage inventory of tools and materials on the job site and order more as necessary to complete the job
  • Supervise and document testing of all pipe prior to it being entered into the distribution system
  • Oversee the implementation of plans to ensure the health and safety of all employees in the region
  • All other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position will supervise union employees.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • High school diploma/GED

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Two or more years of experience in the installation, replacement and/or maintenance of natural gas main/ services required
  • Knowledge and experience with union contracts preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Basic computer skills required (example, Microsoft word, e-mail, various software)
  • Bore rig/ directional boring experience preferred 
  • Recognize problems and respond, systematically gather information, sort through complex issues, understand consequences of decisions, seeks input from others
  • Ability to make difficult decisions and communicate those decisions to others
  • Sets challenging and productive goals for the team and holds others accountable for actions
  • Ability to provide resources and support
  • Ability to use checkpoints and processes to measure results
  • Ability to provide and communicate clear performance objectives
  • Must live no more than thirty (30) miles beyond the boundary of the reporting location (Birmingham Metro, 14 13th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203)

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • A mix of normal office conditions, outdoors exposed to all weather conditions, in construction areas with uneven surfaces and in areas exposed to loud audible noises
  • Required to work assigned weekend schedule.
