Summary

Spire is seeking a Construction and Maintenance Technician for the Mobile, AL, Operation Center.  This position is responsible for performing tasks involving heavy physical labor in the construction and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system.  Follows appropriate safety guidelines and uses safe work habits.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment and power tools such as backhoes and jackhammers.  Digs ditches or trenches, backfills excavations, and compacts and levels earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
  • Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment and materials.
  • Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.  Loads, unloads and identifies materials, machinery and tools and distributes the appropriate locations, according to projects plans and specifications.  Erects and dissembles shoring bracing, traffic barricades, ramps and other temporary structures.
  • Controls traffic passing near, in and around work zones.
  • Locates, measures, marks and records openings and distances to lay our area where construction work will be performed.
  • Lubricates, cleans and repairs machinery, equipment and tools.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Valid driver’s license, required.

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Valid Class A CDL license or the ability to obtain such license within 120 days of starting in the role, preferred.
  • Requires being exact or highly accurate.
  • Ability to work effectively alone and with others in a group or team.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Includes responsibility for the health and safety of others.  Ability to follow appropriate safety guidelines and use safe work habits.

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Ability to use hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls; walk, stand, climb, crouch, crawl, bend or twist; and lift or move heavy objects.  Requires repetitive movement.  Includes exposure to whole body vibration.  
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and maneuver in awkward positions.
  • Includes exposures to contaminants.  Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.  Ability to work in very hot (above 90 F degrees) and very cold (below 32 F degrees) temperatures, and extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions. Requires working outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions.
  • Requires exposure to hazardous equipment and conditions.  Requires exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites and stings.
  • Requires wearing applicable protective or safety equipment.
  • Qualified Applicants MUST reside within 20 driving miles of the work site. 
  • May require some travel.
