Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the strategic planning process and long-term financial planning processes for Spire, its business units and emerging businesses.
  • Create databases and help refine analytical frameworks, models, tools, etc. to support Spire’s strategic planning and corporate development efforts, including:
    • Conducting industry value chain, competitive and strategic analyses
    • Preparing capital market and M&A market and transaction analyses
    • Conducting high level and detailed analyses of targets
  • Assist in preparing financial analyses, pro-forma financial statements, business cases and valuation models for existing businesses and potential new businesses and services.
  • Assist on M&A projects, participating to varying degrees in certain phases of project and transaction work
  • Assist in preparing recommendations and making presentations for potential acquisitions, investments and other strategic initiatives, including new regulated and non-regulated businesses, to the senior management team.

Essential Characteristics and Competencies

  • Strategic thinking and knowledge of business and financial concepts, principles, and practices as they relate to the strategy planning and corporate development processes.
  • Comfortable with abstract concepts and complex technical issues, and demonstrated intellectual curiosity regarding business drivers, business strategies and investment performance metrics.
  • Ability and commitment to develop a thorough knowledge of the gas industry (i.e., utility, midstream and upstream) and Spire over time, including its various business units, assets, operations, and shared services support functions. This includes an ability to learn critical regulatory concepts and rules in multiple jurisdictions for utilities and at FERC for midstream businesses, and more generally, Spire’s financial accounting, cost allocation, and reporting practices and policies.
  • Analytical mind and able to synthesize information from a variety of sources to help identify market trends and opportunities, understand strategic risks and opportunities, help develop and evaluate potential acquisitions and new business investments.
  • Proven track record of persistence, sound judgement, and ability to work effectively within a dynamic work setting.
  • Good written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and ability to help create persuasive presentations for the Leadership Council, Board of Directors or other audiences.

Required Education: (may include certifications, licenses and registrations)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in finance, accounting, economics, or MBA (with concentration in finance) is required.


  • Financial analysis experience; ability to assist in evaluating business opportunities; properly frame a problem, weigh relevance and accuracy of information; evaluate alternative paths forward and assist with recommendations
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience

Physical demands, work environment and work schedule:

  • Work is performed in a shared office environment.
  • Typically, 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the flexibility to work additional hours as required depending on the number of active projects and their deadlines.
  • Minimal travel is required.
