Spire is seeking a Director, Associate General Counsel to work in the St. Louis, MO operation. This position will be responsible for providing and managing the legal representation of Spire- Missouri East, Spire Missouri- West, Spire- Alabama, Spire Gulf and Spire-Mississippi. appeals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing or providing direct legal representation of Spire entities before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, including providing legal advice and counsel to the management of Spire’s gas utilities regarding FERC matters. preparing/supervising preparation of appellate briefs and oral arguments on appeal.
  • Providing legal advice and counsel, as needed, to the management of Spire’s gas utilities regarding state regulatory matters, including legal representation of Spire’s gas utilities before the Missouri Public Service Commission, the Alabama Public Service Commission, and the Mississippi Public Service Commission; Keeping Legal Department management, the Leadership Council and, as requested, the Board of Directors, advised on all material activities.
  • Develop, supervise, consult, direct and/or perform legal services in other aspects of the corporation’s legal needs. This shall include development and training of subordinate legal professionals.  
  • Regulatory policies governing the energy industry.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for project management of other employees in the context of regulatory and court proceedings.
  • Ability to supervise more junior attorneys and non-attorney staff

Required Education: (may include certifications, licenses and registrations)

  • A law degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school
  • Experience working in the regulated energy business, and in particular working with regulated public utilities, is preferred
  • At least eight years’ experience practicing before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
  • At least five years’ experience practicing before a state public service commission
  • Experience supervising employees, particularly more junior attorneys, preferred
  • License to practice law in the State of Missouri or an ability and willingness to become a member (or limited member) of the Missouri Bar.

Required knowledge, skill and abilities:

  • Knowledge of public utility law
  • Knowledge of energy law
  • Knowledge of administrative law
  • Ability to establish effective interpersonal business relationships with business partners, counter-parties, commission staff personnel and co-workers
  • Strong project management skills would be a plus
