This position has primary responsibility for management and implementation of external and public communications targeted for the community, investors, stakeholders, customers and employees of Spire Inc.

Primary duties:

  • Develop and implement external communications plan to align with Spire’s companywide strategy.
  • Develop and implement the annual external communications plan, including strategic objectives to reach stakeholders and external audiences that specifically align corporate strategies with Spire’s business objectives.
  • Maintain 24/7 media line and coordinate media responses with communications and company leadership.
  • Coordinate public relations, issues management and crisis communications with the field, customer experience and leadership teams across Spire businesses and regions and serve as the company spokesperson as needed.
  • Connect regularly with members of the leadership, sales, field and customer experience teams to deliver high-quality, informative, and interesting news releases, media kits, and related materials for distribution on multiple external platforms.
  • Implement and maintain public communications for customers and employees using all relevant and established communications and marketing channels, including digital and traditional media outlets as appropriate.
  • Organize promotional events, news conferences, media tours, new station visits, and conference exhibitions to support Spire’s business objectives.
  • Actively engage in public presence initiatives in eastern Missouri, helping to identify and implement charitable giving, sponsorships and civic support.
  • Support employee engagement activities, including events, sports teams, corporate initiatives and more.
  • Identify and maintain industry research to ensure consistency and depth of knowledge.
  • Facilitate communications and media training as needed.
  • Develop relationships with industry stakeholders to support Spire’s business objectives.
  • Create presentations, articles, reports, and information for external distribution.
  • Manage PR budgets and third-party vendors and agencies.
  • Analyze and evaluate media coverage. Develop and distribute daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual media activity reports.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional writing, communications, presentation, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Community focus, results-driven, teamwork, communications, adaptability, quality, initiative, problem-solving and analysis.
  • Ability to manage and track multiple projects, often with competing deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Cision Cloud and media tracking tools.

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • May supervise 1-2 employees directly or indirectly.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, business or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Ten years of experience in a variety of communications areas, especially Public Relations and Employee Communications.
  • Extensive experience in project management.
  • Extensive experience as a polished writer with application in a variety of voices, messages and communication vehicles.

Work environment:

  • Work is performed in a shared office and will work closely with and stay connected to the Corporate Communications & Marketing teams in other Spire geographies
  • Available to work nights or weekends when needed
  • Up to 30% travel required to other Spire offices and employee locations
