The position will oversee the implementation of safety initiatives, supervise safety audits, maintain accurate records of metrics and compliance, represent our safety culture, and be a resource for safety concerns. This position will also assist with or perform investigations of work related injuries and illnesses and will interface with and support the Worker’s Compensation Department and act as an integral part of the Company’s in-house safety training. This position can be based out of St. Louis, Kansas City, or Birmingham.

Primary duties:

  • Advise, guide, and manage safety personnel while setting performance standards, expectations and ensuring quality.
  • Provide risk control resources to the Company through various department meetings, safety meetings, and Operations meetings.
  • Create, modify, or amend Company procedures for employee safety regulatory compliance, as well as risk controls.
  • Interface with union officials on employee safety problem solving issues.
  • Review, formulate, and disseminate required reports, trends, and analysis.
  • Plan and prepare business planning and budgetary requirements.
  • Communication skill set must be conducive to teaching other department employees in safety and health practices and regulations such as OSHA 10 & 30 hour certification courses.
  • Assist with the procurement of safety equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in industry committees and workshops to stay on top of the latest safety, risk assessment and disaster preparedness issues.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Eight years of related gas industry experience.
  • Six years of regulatory compliance experience.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-moving and changing culture and display a positive attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build and establish rapport with a diverse array of people.
  • Knowledge of industry, construction, and production practices.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good research skills.
  • Self-starting and self-directing disposition.
  • Ability to read and interpret government regulations, such as OSHA standards.
  • Ability to identify trends and indicators.
  • Ability to sort through information and decipher facts.
  • Ability to apply the skills and knowledge one has obtained.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, safety management or an equivalent discipline.

Certificates, licenses, registrations:

  • Certified Utility Safety Administrator certified with Gas Specific Endorsement or Certified Safety Professional preferred or expected to achieve within 24 months.
  • OSHA 10-hour certification; HAZWOPER certification; First Aid, CPR, AED certification required or expected to achieve within 12 months.

Work environment:

  • Shared office environment.
  • Regular travel (minimum 50% of time) to operations locations including overnight stays is required.
  • Extensive outdoor work in varied weather. When conducting field work, may be exposed to natural gas and other chemicals, extreme hot and cold outdoor temperatures, near moving mechanical parts, exposed to moderate to loud noise level, and work near traffic.
  • Regularly on-call for incident evaluation and response.
  • Typically, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with adjustments to fulfill the operating departments’ safety schedules.
  • Moderate additional hours per month may be required for off-hour audits or to attend after-hours meetings.
